Sew By The Hour

Don’t own a working sewing machine, or lack adequate crafting space at home? We can help! Needlework provides a sew-by-the-hour studio for individuals who are able to work on their sewing projects independently.

Needlework is equipped with:

  • 5 Janome Sewist 625E Sewing Machines
  • 5 Janome Pro 4DX Sergers
  • 3 Ironing Stations
  • A variety of shared sewing tools!

How it works:

Though our staff is never too far if you run into technical difficulties, studio rental time is self-directed. Customers who wish to sew-by-the-hour must know how to thread a sewing machine and sew independently, or have taken our Sewing Machine Basics class within the past six months. Sew-by-the-hour use of our space is first-come first-serve and is subject to availability.

Sew By the Hour is generally available during our retail hours. Please call 905 667 5663 to confirm availability.

Rental Rates:

  • $12/hour
  • $35 for a one month pass
  • $90 for a three month pass

FAQ:

Will you help me with my project while I'm sewing by the hour?

Due to limited staffing and the number of other tasks that need to get done in the shop (helping retail customers, fulfilling online orders, answer emails, etc), sew by the hour is an independent activity. But if you run into a problem and are totally stuck, don't worry, we can help get you un-stuck.

Do I need to bring my own tools?

You can, but we likely have everything you need! You just need to bring your fabric, thread, and any other materials you want to use.

Can I come to sew anytime that you're open?

We have specific times for Sew By The Hour, since certain periods (especially on weekends) are too busy for us to manage Sew By The Hour. Please see above for the times you can drop-in to sew.

I just need to use the machine for 15 minutes, can I pay for a quarter of an hour?

Sorry! One hour is the minimum payment.

I want to use a serger, do I need to bring my own thread?

As long as you're not too picky about thread colour, you can use whatever thread we have on our sergers. If you want your serger thread to match your project perfectly, we'd suggest bringing your own thread in (you'll need four cones). We do have a limited selection of serger thread for sale as well, which you are welcome to purchase.
