Sashiko is a Japanese traditional stitching technique, which is very easy to learn. Its stitching lines make simple and beautiful patterns on the cloth.
The design is printed on one half of the sampler. The other half of the sampler has no design/blank. The plain half is provided as the backing for a pillow or other project. As an option, try drawing your own design on the blank half. Another option is to stitch through both layers for a heavier fabric if using for a quilt square. In Japan, the samplers are stitched through both layers, hemmed and used for tea towels or table decorations.
